The co-inventor
Émile Bernard

Barely out of his teens, he helped work out Cloisonnism (flat zones of color fenced off by dark outlines, like medieval stained glass) and brought it to Gauguin at Pont-Aven. History tends to hand Gauguin the credit, but the breakthrough was a collaboration, and Bernard was in the room.
