Ernst was the technical inventor of the bunch, forever finding new ways to let chance do the drawing: collage that stitched old engravings into nightmares, and frottage, rubbing pencil over textured surfaces to coax out monsters. If a Surrealist trick looks like magic, odds are Ernst worked it out first.
