Théodore Rousseau

The stubborn leader of the Barbizon painters, who insisted on working out of doors straight from nature back when the jury thought that was no way to make a picture. They rejected him so relentlessly the press nicknamed him "le grand refusé," and he settled in the village that gave the whole movement its name.
