He skewered a king as a giant money-swallowing pear and did jail time for it, then cranked out 4,000 lithographs aimed at the powerful and the smug. Off the newsstand he was a serious painter too, finding the same unguarded humanity in a third-class railway carriage that he found absurd in a courtroom.
