Landscape as religion
Caspar David Friedrich

He put solitary figures with their backs to the viewer before immense mountains, oceans, and ruins, turning landscape into a direct encounter with the infinite. His canvases are quiet to the point of silence, and whatever the figure feels standing at that cliff edge or fogged shoreline, the viewer is made to feel it too.
