Disaster on the big wall
Théodore Géricault

He took a recent, scandalous shipwreck (the Medusa ran aground through incompetence, the survivors resorted to cannibalism, the government tried to bury the story) and painted it as a government-scale history canvas, turning contemporary catastrophe into high art. He died at 32 from injuries sustained falling from a horse, leaving behind one unmistakable masterpiece.
