Court painter to the Spanish crown by day, the artist who dragged nightmares onto walls by night. His Black Paintings, made for his own house and never meant for anyone else, are some of the most unsettling images in Western art, executed while he was deaf, old, and watching his country eat itself. He belongs to Romanticism only loosely; he belongs to the 20th century completely.
