History painter, RA founder
Angelica Kauffman

One of only two women among the founding members of the Royal Academy in 1768, at a moment when history painting (the most prestigious genre) was officially a men’s domain. She painted classical scenes with the same learned authority as her male contemporaries and built a career across Switzerland, Italy, and England that neither her gender nor the critics could derail.
