Anton Raphael Mengs

The artist Winckelmann pointed to as proof that the Antique could be reborn, painting Parnassus on the ceiling of the Villa Albani in 1761 as a kind of visual thesis statement for the whole movement. He spent his career alternating between Rome, Madrid, and Dresden, producing work so theoretically correct it occasionally forgot to be warm.
