A modern insult hides inside the name. To call an argument "scholastic" is to call it dry, pedantic, lost in distinctions that do not matter, the kind of reasoning that supposedly asked how many angels could dance on the head of a pin. That caricature is almost entirely false, including the pin. No medieval thinker ever debated the angels on the pinhead; the gibe was invented centuries later by people who wanted the schoolmen to look ridiculous. What the word actually names is one of the boldest intellectual programs in Western history: a three-century campaign to prove that the truths of faith could survive contact with the most rigorous available, and would come out stronger.
The wager underneath it is easy to miss because it now sounds obvious. Roughly between 1100 and 1400, the teachers in Europe's cathedral schools and new universities bet that revealed doctrine and human reason were not enemies. A Christian could believe what the Church taught and submit those beliefs to relentless logical scrutiny, marshal every objection an opponent could raise, and answer them on their merits, and faith would be the better for it. That confidence had a shape, a procedure, a piece of mental technology so distinctive it became the period's signature. It was called the scholastic method: pose a sharp question, gather the strongest arguments against one's own position, state the authority on the other side, give a reasoned answer, then reply to each objection one by one.
The people who ran this experiment were not a single school in the way the Stoics or the Epicureans were. They argued with each other constantly, over the existence of God, the nature of universal concepts, how far reason could go before faith had to take over, and they used the same method against each other that they used against unbelievers. They built universities to house the argument. They imported a long-lost Aristotle and nearly tore Christian theology apart absorbing him. They produced, in Aquinas, the grandest synthesis of philosophy and faith the West has ever seen. And then a later generation, using the very tools the tradition had sharpened, concluded that reason could not reach as far into faith as the great synthesizers had claimed, and quietly pulled the two apart again.
So this is the life story of a method and the conviction behind it: where the confidence came from, what it built, what it cost, and why the tradition that trusted reason most ended by marking reason's limits. It runs from a monk's prayer that turned into a proof, through the lecture halls of Paris and Oxford, to a Franciscan with a razor. The whole arc is one long argument about a single question that has never gone away. How much of what people believe can be defended by what they can prove?
The break
There was a real position on the other side, and it was not stupid. For much of the early Middle Ages the dominant instinct was that the central truths of religion were received, not reasoned out, and that probing them too hard was at best a distraction and at worst dangerous pride. The model of the holy life was the monk at prayer, not the debater in the schoolroom. Bernard of Clairvaux, the most influential churchman of the twelfth century, held this with real force: God is approached through love, humility, and prayer, and a man who turns the mysteries of faith into a tournament of logic-chopping has mistaken cleverness for holiness and put his own intellect where his knees should be. On that view, applying the tools of the pagan logicians to the articles of the creed was not just useless but a kind of irreverence. The mysteries were to be adored, not cross-examined.
The scholastic move is to refuse the choice. Faith and reason, the schoolmen argued, cannot finally contradict each other, because both come from the same God: the God who reveals the creed is the God who made the mind that reasons. So a believer has nothing to fear from logic and a great deal to gain. Reason cannot prove the deepest mysteries (that God is three persons, that he became a particular man), but it can prove a great deal short of them (that God exists, that he is one, that the soul is immortal), it can organize the whole body of doctrine into a coherent system, it can answer the objections of unbelievers in their own currency, and it can dig out implications the tradition had never noticed. The way to honor a hard truth is not to fence it off from questions but to face the questions squarely and show the truth standing afterward.
That is the break, and it produced a concrete instrument, which matters because the whole tradition is a series of moves made with one tool. The instrument is the scholastic method, the disputed question. A master poses a precise question (does God exist? is the soul immortal?), then states the case against his own conclusion as strongly as he can, often citing the heavyweight authorities on the wrong side. He answers with a sed contra, Latin for "on the contrary," a counter-authority or argument. Then comes the respondeo, "I answer that," the reasoned position. Finally he returns to each opening objection and dismantles it. The genius of the form is that it forces the strongest version of the opposing case into the open before any answer is given. A scholastic could not duck the hardest objection to his view; the format required him to write it down first. Every figure in the chapters that follow inherits this instrument and turns it on a different problem, and in the end one of them turns it on the tradition's own central claim.
Chapter 1
The schools that became universities
"All men by nature desire to know."
The institution comes first, because Scholasticism is the philosophy that a new kind of school made possible. Through the early Middle Ages serious learning lived mainly in monasteries, where literate culture was preserved by monks copying manuscripts, and the goal of study was devotion. From the eleventh century the center of gravity began to shift to the cathedral schools, attached to the great churches of growing towns, where teaching was a public craft and students paid to be taught. The most famous was the cathedral school of Paris, where a brilliant, combative teacher could draw students from across Europe by the force of his lectures. The subject that drew them, increasingly, was dialectic: the art of reasoning, of argument and counter-argument, inherited in scraps from the ancient logicians. Dialectic was the engine, and the towns were where it caught.
Out of these schools, around the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, grew the institution that has organized higher learning ever since: the university. The Latin word behind it, universitas, did not mean a campus or a body of knowledge. It meant a corporation, a guild, the same kind of self-governing association that bakers or weavers formed to protect their trade. A university was a guild of masters and students, banded together to set standards, control who could teach, and bargain with the town and the church. Three early centers set the pattern: Bologna, which became the great school of law; Paris, the towering school of theology and the liberal arts; and Oxford in England. Their familiar founding dates are mostly later inventions (Bologna's official 1088 is a nineteenth-century anniversary, Paris coalesced around 1200, Oxford gathered itself in the late 1100s); the institutions emerged gradually, as guilds do, rather than opening on a day.
What made the university the natural home of Scholasticism was its core activities, which were argument made into routine. Teaching ran on two exercises. The lectio, the lecture, was a master reading and expounding an authoritative text line by line. The disputatio, the disputation, was the real intellectual sport: a formal public debate in which a question was posed, one side argued, the other answered, objections were raised and met, and the presiding master delivered a determination at the end. Generations of students were trained to think in exactly the shape of the scholastic method, because they did it out loud, in front of their peers, as the test of their competence. The written Summa, the great organized treatise of the period, is the disputation set down on the page: question after question, each with its objections, its sed contra, its answer, its replies.
All of this happened in one language. From Lisbon to Kraków, the scholar's tongue was Latin, the shared medium of the Church and of learning, which meant a student trained at Paris could lecture at Oxford and a book written in Bologna could be argued over in Cologne without translation. The schools were an international network running on a common language and a common method, and that shared toolkit is why the tradition could be a genuine conversation across borders and generations rather than a scatter of local schools. The appetite driving the whole thing was the one the chapter's epigraph names. The schoolmen took it for a settled fact, on the authority of a philosopher most of them could not yet read in full: that all human beings, by their very nature, want to understand. The tradition was a wager that this appetite, turned loose on the contents of faith, would be rewarded rather than punished.
Chapter 2
Faith seeking understanding
"I do not seek to understand that I may believe, but I believe in order to understand."
The tradition's earliest great mind set its motto before the universities existed. Anselm (1033 to 1109) was a monk and then abbot at the monastery of Bec in Normandy, and later Archbishop of Canterbury, and he is the bridge from the old monastic learning into the new logical confidence. His famous formula is the whole scholastic wager in a phrase: credo ut intelligam, "I believe in order to understand." Belief comes first, but it does not stop the work; it starts it. Faith is not a wall against questions but a doorway into them, because once a thing is believed, the mind can set out to grasp why it is true. Anselm aimed that confidence at the highest possible target. He tried to prove, by reason alone, with no appeal to scripture, that God exists, and he produced the single most famous and most argued-over proof in the history of philosophy.
The argument runs in a few steps, and it shows the tradition's nerve at full stretch. Anselm starts from a definition that even an atheist can grasp: God is "a being than which nothing greater can be conceived." The unbeliever, in denying that God exists, has to understand the phrase in order to deny it, so the idea of such a being exists at least in his understanding. Anselm's next move is to ask what follows if that being existed only in the understanding, only as an idea. Then a greater being could be conceived: the very same being, but existing in reality as well as in thought, which would plainly be greater than a merely imagined one. That is a contradiction, because the original being was defined as the one than which nothing greater can be conceived. So the being than which nothing greater can be conceived cannot exist in thought alone. It must exist in reality. God's existence, on this argument, follows from the mere concept of God, the way a triangle's three angles follow from the definition of a triangle.
The proof drew an objection immediately, from a monk named Gaunilo, who wrote a reply titled On Behalf of the Fool, and the objection has the honest force the scholastic method demands. Take the most perfect island imaginable, Gaunilo said, an island "more excellent than all other countries." By Anselm's reasoning, since an island existing in reality would be greater than one existing only in thought, the perfect island must exist. But that is absurd; no such island is out there. So something is wrong with the form of the argument. Anselm answered that the logic works for nothing in the world except the single being than which nothing greater can be conceived. Any island can always be topped by a slightly better island; "greatest island" is not even a coherent limit. Only with the maximal being itself does the very concept require existence. Whether Anselm or Gaunilo wins is still being argued nine centuries later, which is its own kind of testament. (The label "ontological argument" is not Anselm's; the philosopher Immanuel Kant pinned it on, with disapproval, some six hundred years afterward.)
While Anselm was proving God in a monastery, a younger man was building the method's other half in the schools of Paris. Peter Abelard (1079 to 1142) was the age's most dazzling and most quarrelsome teacher, and his lasting contribution was a book that took the central problem of medieval learning and made a machine out of it. The problem was authority. Christian thought rested on a vast inheritance of sacred and revered texts, scripture and the Church Fathers, and these authorities did not always agree. They contradicted one another, sometimes flatly. The pious response was to look away or explain the clash off. Abelard did the opposite. In his Sic et Non (Latin for "Yes and No") he collected 158 hard theological questions and, under each, lined up the authorities that said yes against the authorities that said no, on the page, side by side, and then declined to resolve them.
The point was not to embarrass the tradition but to force it to think. Abelard's prologue argues, in effect, that doubt is the beginning of inquiry and inquiry the road to truth: confronted with authorities in open conflict, the student cannot coast on received answers but has to reason his way through, weighing the texts, checking for different senses of a word, asking which authority spoke on what occasion. The contradictions are not a scandal to be hidden; they are the friction that makes a mind work. That move, the deliberate collision of the strongest opposing authorities as the start of thinking rather than a problem to suppress, is the engine of the entire scholastic method. The mature disputation is Sic et Non with the missing step supplied: yes, no, and now the reasoned answer that does justice to both.
Abelard built the engine; another Peter built the chassis. Peter Lombard (around 1096 to 1160), a theologian who became bishop of Paris, took the same scattered inheritance of scriptural and patristic authorities and, instead of staging their conflicts, organized them. His textbook, the Sentences (in Latin the Sententiae, meaning the considered opinions of the authorities), arranged the whole of Christian doctrine into four books, topic by topic, marshaling what the Fathers had said on each and working toward settled positions. It was clear, comprehensive, and teachable, and it became the most important textbook in the medieval university after the Bible itself. For the next three centuries, the way a young theologian announced himself was by lecturing on the Sentences and writing a commentary on it. Aquinas did it. Scotus did it. Ockham did it. Peter Lombard gave the tradition its standard curriculum, and so its common ground: a shared map of every question worth disputing.
Chapter 3
The pagan who nearly broke it
"All men by nature desire to know."
Then a dead Greek arrived and almost wrecked the project. For most of the early medieval centuries the Latin West knew Aristotle (384 to 322 BC) only in fragments: a couple of his logical treatises, translated long before, and little else. His vast body of work on the natural world, the soul, , politics, and the ultimate structure of reality was simply gone from Western libraries, surviving in Greek in the Byzantine East and, crucially, in Arabic. Across the Islamic world, scholars had translated nearly the whole Aristotelian corpus centuries earlier and built three hundred years of commentary on top of it. When that material began flowing into Europe (through the Christian reconquest of Toledo in Spain, where Arabic libraries fell into Latin hands and translators went to work), it hit the schools like a flood. Suddenly the most powerful and complete philosophical system the ancient world had produced was available, entire, for the first time.
It came with a guide attached, and the guide was as influential as the master. The Andalusian philosopher Averroes (Ibn Rushd, 1126 to 1198, of Córdoba) had written commentaries so thorough and so penetrating on Aristotle that the Latins simply called him "the Commentator," the way they called Aristotle "the Philosopher." To read Aristotle in the thirteenth-century West was very often to read him through Averroes, who insisted that the demonstrations of philosophy and the truths of revelation, properly understood, could not finally conflict, because truth does not contradict truth. For Averroes, studying the created world by reason was not a threat to faith but something faith made obligatory. That confidence, that reason rightly used could only confirm what God had revealed, was exactly the conviction the Latin schoolmen were already chasing, now arriving from the Arabic world with the full Aristotle behind it.
The trouble was that the full Aristotle taught things a Christian could not simply accept. His universe looked self-running, eternal, with no beginning, which clashed head-on with the doctrine that God created the world out of nothing at a moment in time. His account of the soul, especially as some readers took it through Averroes, seemed to deny that each person has an individual soul that survives death, which gutted the doctrine of personal immortality. Here was a system of breathtaking rational power that contradicted the creed at its foundations. The schools faced a genuine crisis. They could reject Aristotle and forfeit the most formidable intellectual instrument available, or swallow him whole and watch him corrode the faith, or find some third path. The church authorities tried the first option directly: in the early thirteenth century, lecturing on Aristotle's natural philosophy was repeatedly banned at Paris. The bans failed. The books were too good, and the students kept reading.
The man who chose the third path first, on the grand scale, was a German Dominican named Albert the Great (Albertus Magnus, around 1200 to 1280). Albert was a polymath of staggering range, as much a naturalist as a theologian, who dissected plants and observed animals and wrote his own commentaries on nearly the entire Aristotelian corpus. His program was to absorb rather than to ban: to master Aristotle completely, sort what was true from what genuinely conflicted with faith, and put the rational machinery to Christian use. Aristotle, he insisted, should be studied, corrected where necessary, and largely kept. Albert did not finish the job of reconciliation; the system was too vast and the conflicts too sharp for one lifetime. But he trained the student who would. In his lecture hall at Cologne sat a heavy, silent young Italian nobleman whom the other students mocked as a dullard, and whom Albert is said to have defended with a prophecy that the silent ox would one day bellow loud enough to fill the world.
Chapter 4
The summit
"Therefore it is necessary to arrive at a first mover, put in motion by no other; and this everyone understands to be God."
The silent ox was Aquinas (around 1225 to 1274), and what he built is the summit of the whole tradition, the most complete attempt anyone has made to fit the entire body of Christian belief and the entire system of Aristotle into a single coherent structure. Aquinas was a Dominican friar (a member of a preaching order, unlike a cloistered monk, friars lived and worked out in the world) from a noble Italian family that opposed his vocation so fiercely they confined him at home for roughly a year to break his resolve. They failed. He went to Albert, absorbed Aristotle and the Arabic and Jewish philosophers who had carried him, and spent his life on the reconciliation his teacher had begun. His masterwork, the Summa Theologiae, written from the mid-1260s and left unfinished at his death in 1274, was meant as a textbook for beginners. It runs to thousands of pages and is built entirely out of disputed questions, the scholastic method applied, with monumental patience, to the whole of theology.
His governing idea solves the crisis Aristotle had caused. Faith and reason, Aquinas held, are two roads to truth that cannot collide, because God is the source of both. Some truths reason can reach on its own (that God exists, that he is one, that the soul is immortal); some it cannot and must receive from revelation (that God is a Trinity of three persons, that he became man). The two never contradict, because one God authored the world the philosopher studies and the scripture the believer reads. Reason does not threaten faith and faith does not insult reason; faith completes what reason begins. He put it in a single line that is the tradition's whole program compressed: "grace does not destroy nature but perfects it." The natural light of human reason is not canceled by revelation but carried further by it, the way sight is not destroyed by more light but enabled to see more.

The method in full operation is Aquinas's "Five Ways," the most famous passage he ever wrote. He poses the question: does God exist? Then, as the format demands, he states the strongest objections to his own answer, and he does not flinch from them. The first is the problem of evil: if God, who is infinite goodness, existed, there would be no evil in the world; but there plainly is evil; therefore God does not exist. The second is the principle of economy: it is superfluous, the objection runs, to suppose that what can be accounted for by a few principles has been produced by many, and the world can apparently be explained by nature and human reason alone, with no need to invoke God. He writes down the two hardest cases against his own position before offering a word in its favor. That is the discipline of the form: the objection comes first, in full strength.
Then the answer. The First Way argues from motion. Some things in the world are in motion, Aquinas observes, and whatever is in motion is put in motion by something else; nothing moves itself. A staff moves the stone only because the hand moves the staff: "the staff moves only because it is put in motion by the hand." The crucial point is that this is not a story about who pushed first long ago; it is about dependence right now. The staff is moving the stone only so long as the hand is moving the staff, this instant. Trace any such chain of present, sustaining causes, and it cannot run back forever, because if there were no first mover sustaining the whole series, there would be no motion at all, no hand to move the staff. So there must be a first mover, itself moved by nothing, holding the whole chain in motion. "Therefore it is necessary to arrive at a first mover, put in motion by no other; and this everyone understands to be God." Then he returns to the two objections and answers each: evil exists because God permits it to draw greater good from it, and nature itself is a principle that traces back to God, so economy does not rule him out but requires him.
One honest seam in that argument is the tradition's character in miniature, and Aquinas saw it himself. The proof reaches "a first mover," a necessary, unmoved source of all motion. It does not, by itself, reach the God of any particular scripture, the God who is three persons and became a man. The last clause, "and this everyone understands to be God," is doing real work, and what it gets to is the philosophers' God, the bare metaphysical first cause, not yet the God of the creed. Aquinas knew the difference exactly. The Five Ways are reason's road as far as reason can travel; revelation supplies the rest. That was the synthesis at its most confident: reason can walk most of the way to God under its own power, and where it stops, faith takes over without contradiction. The whole structure depended on the belief that reason really could walk that far. The next generation would test that belief, and find a shorter road than Aquinas had drawn.
Chapter 5
Universals, and the unraveling

Running underneath the whole tradition, from Anselm to Ockham, was a question that sounds technical and turns out to be the deepest fault line in medieval thought. It is called the problem of universals. Two sheets of paper are both white. There is the first sheet, and the second sheet, two separate particular things. But there is also, apparently, whiteness, the quality they share, the thing that makes each of them count as white. The question is brutally simple: is whiteness real? Is there genuinely something, whiteness itself, that exists and that both sheets possess? Or is "whiteness" just a word, a name humans attach to a bunch of particular things that happen to resemble one another, with nothing real behind the word but the individual things themselves? The same question runs for humanity, for justice, for every general term. A universal is any such shared, general feature; the problem is whether universals exist or are only names.
Two answers split the tradition. The first is realism: universals are real. There genuinely is such a thing as whiteness or humanity, more than just a label, and particular white things or particular humans are what they are by sharing in it. Realism is the natural home of the scholastic synthesis, because if universals are real, then the mind, in grasping them, is grasping the actual structure of reality, and the world is built to be understood. The deepest version, descending from Plato through Augustine, located the universals in the mind of God as the eternal patterns of creation, which made the order the intellect discovers nothing less than a reading of God's own thought. Realism gave reason an enormous reach: to understand the world was to understand the rational order God had built into it. The opposing answer is nominalism, from the Latin nomen, "name." On this view only particular things exist, the individual sheets, the individual people, and universals are merely names, useful labels the mind invents to group similar particulars. There is no whiteness over and above white things. There are just the things, and the words we sort them with.
Abelard, back in the twelfth century, had already leaned toward the spare side of this, treating universality as something that belongs to words rather than to a realm of real shared essences. But the question stayed live for two hundred years, and how a thinker answered it shaped everything else, because it decided how much of reality reason could expect to penetrate. The bridge figure into the tradition's final phase was a Franciscan of extraordinary subtlety, Duns Scotus (around 1266 to 1308), nicknamed "the Subtle Doctor" for the fineness of his distinctions. Scotus was a realist, but he introduced a move that would prove corrosive in other hands: he argued that the concept of being applies in the very same sense to God and to creatures, rather than only by analogy. That sounds like a small adjustment. It mattered enormously, because it licensed running the same logic on God that one runs on anything else, and it sharpened the conceptual tools to a dangerous edge. Scotus also worked out, with great care, the principles of economy in reasoning that the next man would make a household word.
That man was Ockham (around 1287 to 1347), an English Franciscan who lectured on Peter Lombard's Sentences at Oxford and never finished the formal steps to a full professorship, which earned him the wry title "the Venerable Beginner." Ockham was a thoroughgoing nominalist, and a radical one: in the created world, he held, everything that exists is a singular, particular thing, and universals are concepts in the mind, names with no independent reality at all. And he is forever attached to a principle of parsimony, the rule that explanations should not pile up more entities than they need. The famous Latin tag "entities must not be multiplied beyond necessity" is not actually his; it appears nowhere in his writings and was first put in that form by a commentator three centuries later. What Ockham really wrote was that plurality is not to be posited without necessity, and that it is pointless to do with more what can be done with fewer, the same idea Scotus had also stated. "Ockham's razor" bears his name roughly the way America bears Amerigo Vespucci's: by a later accident, not because he coined the phrase.
The razor was a tool for cutting away superfluous entities, and Ockham applied it ruthlessly, including to the universals the realists treasured: if particular things plus mental concepts can explain everything, then real universals out in the world are exactly the kind of extra entity the razor removes. But the consequence that unmade the synthesis was theological, and it came from a conviction about God's freedom. Ockham held that God is absolutely, unconditionally free. There is no order of necessary truths that even God must conform to; he could have made the world entirely otherwise, with different laws, different values, different connections between things. And if that is so, then the world is not a rational structure the mind can deduce; it is simply the way God happened to choose, and the only way to find out how it works is to look. Reason cannot read off the necessary order of things, because there is no necessary order for it to read; there is only God's free decision and the world that resulted. With that, reason's reach shortens dramatically. It can no longer climb most of the way to God by demonstration, because the bridges Aquinas walked across (the necessary connections between cause and effect, creature and creator) are just not load-bearing in a world God could have built any other way.
This is the unraveling, and it is the work of the method's own sharpest tools. Ockham was no skeptic and no unbeliever; he was a Franciscan theologian who believed everything the creed taught. But he had pulled faith and reason back apart. The great synthesizers had said reason can prove much of what faith holds and the two roads meet; Ockham said the things that matter most about God and the world are not provable at all but known only because God has revealed them, and reason should keep to its own, much smaller, territory. Faith was now held by faith, and reason left to study the world as it contingently happened to be. The marriage Anselm had proposed and Aquinas had consummated was, by the middle of the fourteenth century, quietly separating, and it was the tradition's most rigorous logic that had filed the papers. Ockham himself spent his last decades far from the schools, in a bitter political fight with the pope over the poverty of the Church, sheltered at the court of a German emperor, excommunicated, and he died around 1347, the year before the Black Death reached his city.
Chapter 6
The afterlife of a slur
"grace does not destroy nature but perfects it."
Two centuries after Ockham, the men of the Renaissance and then the Enlightenment looked back at the schoolmen and saw a great deal to despise. The humanists wanted elegant classical Latin and the wisdom of the ancients read fresh; the scholastics' dense technical jargon, their endless distinctions, their habit of disputing fine points of logic, looked to them like the dead hand of a barren age. The new scientists wanted to study nature by observation and experiment, not by arguing from the texts of Aristotle; to them the scholastic method looked like a machine for generating words about words. Out of that contempt the word "scholastic" curdled into the insult it still carries: pedantic, hair-splitting, lost in distinctions too fine to matter, reasoning that goes nowhere because it never touches the world. The schoolmen, who had named themselves simply after the schools they taught in, were rebranded by their successors as the very type of useless cleverness.
The most durable weapon in that campaign is a question no scholastic ever asked. "How many angels can dance on the head of a pin?" is presented, to this day, as the perfect emblem of medieval intellectual futility, grown men gravely debating an absurd non-question. The trouble is that the debate is a fiction. There is no scholastic text in which anyone poses it. The gibe was manufactured later, by writers who wanted the schoolmen to look ridiculous, and it caught on because it so neatly confirmed what people already wanted to believe about the Middle Ages. The actual questions the method took up were the load-bearing questions of any serious worldview: whether the world had a beginning, whether the soul survives death, what makes an action just, whether the most certain knowledge rests on things real or on names. The caricature survives not because it is accurate but because it is convenient.
Underneath the slur was real rigor, and the proof is that the rigor never actually died; it went where rigor goes. The scholastic habits (defining terms with painful precision, stating an opponent's case at full strength before answering it, breaking a large question into its parts and arguing each, distinguishing senses of a word that ordinary speech runs together) are not the opposite of careful philosophy. They are careful philosophy, and they reappear, stripped of the theology and the Latin, in the most demanding philosophical work of the modern age. Twentieth-century , the tradition that prizes logical clarity, exact definitions, and arguments laid out step by checkable step, is recognizably the schoolmen's method come round again. When a modern philosopher numbers the premises of an argument, states the strongest objection to a view before defending it, and insists that every key term be defined, that philosopher is doing, in a secular key, what a master at Paris did in the disputation hall.
The deepest legacy, though, is the question the tradition could not finally answer, the one that took it apart. How much of what people believe can reason actually establish? Anselm and Aquinas bet that the answer was "a great deal," that reason could climb most of the way to God and faith complete the climb without contradiction, and they built universities and the most ambitious synthesis in Western thought on that wager. Ockham, using their own tools, bet that the answer was "less than they hoped," that the things that matter most are held by faith and reason should keep to the world it can check, and the synthesis came apart in his hands. Neither side was foolish, and the argument was never settled; it was inherited. Every later thinker who has tried to mark the border between what can be proved and what must simply be believed, from the rationalists who came next to the analytic philosophers of the present day, is working the seam the schoolmen opened. The tradition that earned a name for splitting hairs was in fact arguing about the largest question there is, and the question is still open.
